On 24 March 2026 Shopify switched Agentic Storefronts on by default, so eligible products can already appear, and in some channels sell, inside ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Meta AI. You don't install anything, and there are no extra fees beyond payment processing. The real question is whether an agent has enough clean information to pick your product.
Check your store
Type your domain. The check reads what an agent or AI crawler sees from outside and scores it against what the official docs require.
AI agent readiness check · live
Reads only public pages: robots.txt, policies, one product page. Nothing is saved to a database.

- Publish your policies. Refund, privacy and terms of service under Settings → Policies. Without them you're out of every channel.
- Open Sales channels → Agentic. See which channels are live and fill the knowledge base with real shopper questions: delivery, returns, sizing.
- Set a product category on every product. Uncategorized products are excluded from Shopify Catalog. It's the most common quiet gap.
- Complete the product data. Real image, price above zero, vendor (brand), barcode (GTIN or ISBN) and tracked stock on every variant.
- Write descriptions that answer questions. What it is, who it's for, size, material, what's in the box.
- Check robots.txt. Don't block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot.
- Connect Google Merchant Center if you sell to the US, Canada or Australia and want Google AI Mode and Gemini.
What agents actually read
There's no secret AI format. Agents use three things you already control:
- Your Shopify catalog. It needs the Starter plan or higher, a store that isn't password-protected or B2B-only, and products with a title, image, price above zero, published and not hidden. Alcohol, tobacco, weapons, adult, medical, tickets, services and uncategorized products are excluded.
- Your pages, through crawlers. OAI-SearchBot decides ChatGPT search; GPTBot is only training. PerplexityBot covers Perplexity. Google-Extended only affects Gemini training and grounding, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need nothing beyond normal indexing.
- Structured data and facts. Google's merchant listing markup needs name, image, price and currency, and recommends availability, GTIN, brand, shipping and returns. The Agentic knowledge base takes up to 1,000 facts.
Shopify also publishes /.well-known/ucp (the Universal Commerce Protocol, announced with Google on 11 January 2026) and /agents.md with /llms.txt mirrors. No major AI engine documents using llms.txt for ranking, so don't pay anyone to "optimize" it.
Where agents sell your products
US buyers
ChatGPT
Referral. The shopper checks out on your own store.
US
Microsoft Copilot
Direct checkout inside Copilot.
US, Canada, Australia
Google AI Mode & Gemini
Needs a Merchant Center account. Direct checkout is rolling out.
AU, BR, CA, IN, JP, MX, NZ, SG, KR, UK, US
Meta AI
Direct checkout.
ChatGPT is referral-only since OpenAI ended the first version of Instant Checkout in March 2026. Direct checkout doesn't support subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, or local delivery and pickup.
What a public check can't see
- Product categories, and which products are quietly excluded as uncategorized.
- Agentic toggles and the knowledge base.
- Merchant Center, which Google AI Mode and Gemini need.
- Markets. A store that doesn't ship to the US gets little from ChatGPT or Copilot today.
Worth knowing
Blocking AI crawlers doesn't stop Shopify Catalog syndication. To leave a channel, turn it off in Sales channels → Agentic.
Measuring AI sales
Use Admin → Sales channels → Agentic for sales, orders and sessions per AI channel. With direct checkout (Copilot, Google, Meta AI), GA4 and custom pixels don't fire, so analytics will undercount. ChatGPT referrals often show utm_source=chatgpt.com, but OpenAI doesn't document it.
I run the Shopify stack for four country stores (UK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE) with metafield-driven Product and Book JSON-LD, and I've built an AI shopping assistant and a WhatsApp AI bot on the live catalog. An assistant can only answer from the data it's handed. Message me on WhatsApp and I'll check the parts a public scan can't.

Do I need to do anything to sell through ChatGPT on Shopify?
If your store is eligible, Agentic Storefronts has been on by default since 24 March 2026. Open Admin → Sales channels → Agentic to see which channels are active. ChatGPT is for US buyers and works as a referral: the shopper finds you in ChatGPT and checks out on your own store.
Does blocking GPTBot hide my store from ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is used for training. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers, so that's the one not to block. Blocking crawlers also doesn't stop Shopify Catalog from syndicating your products.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Shopify already serves /agents.md with /llms.txt mirrors. It's harmless, but no major AI engine documents using llms.txt for ranking, and Google says its AI features need no special AI files. Spend the time on product data instead.
Does Shopify charge extra for sales from AI channels?
No extra fees beyond payment processing, according to Shopify's help center. You stay the merchant of record, so the order, the customer and the refund are yours, just like an online store order.
Why aren't some of my products showing in AI channels?
Shopify Catalog needs a title, an image, a price above zero, and the product published to the Online Store and not hidden. Some categories are excluded, including alcohol, tobacco, weapons, adult, medical, tickets, services and uncategorized products, so set a Shopify product category on everything.
Can I see AI agent sales in Google Analytics?
Not fully. When a channel uses direct checkout (Copilot, Google, Meta AI), GA4 and custom pixels don't fire, only server-to-server events. Use Admin → Sales channels → Agentic for sales, orders and sessions per AI channel.
Want your store ready for AI shoppers?
I'll check what a public scan can't: product categories, Agentic channel settings, the knowledge base and Merchant Center, then fix the gaps in your catalog and theme.
